The Early Years of Football

Football on SPC's campus started out as an intramural sport with different divisions.  Although it was intramural, SPC played friendly scrimmages against other local schools such as St. Joseph.  In 1921 Football on campus became a varsity sport while still maintaining intramural teams for friendly scrimmages amongst the students. SPC's only undefeated season was in 1925 with a record of 8-0 under Rev Benedict Brauer.  1932 was an important year for the SPC Cardinals as they beat Concordia to win the division championship.  The Procopian News had a feature article about the game in their November 8th 1932 paper.  Yet again after a few seasons SPC became the conference champs in 1936.  With the emergence of the war, varsity football was suspended in 1943.  Intramural Football on campus continued until half way through the 1945-1946 season when the sport completely became a casualty of war and was suspended.
